2024 Training Session 6: Bee Safari

June 28 - June 29

2024 Training Session 6: Bee Safari

This year we are offering members the chance to do a mini bee safari. There will be several bee safaris taking place. Please state on your form where you live and which day you would prefer.

Malcolm will try and allocate you to a 'bee expert' who lives nearby. The idea is you will have the opportunity for a group to come and see your bees and you in turn will have the opportunity to see 2 other apiaries.

This is an opportunity not to be missed. People’s  knowledge grows exponentially after one of these safaris. Your 'bee expert' may take you to their own apiary if that is appropriate on the day.

Please do not worry about the state of your colony if you are having difficulties. The safari is for you to learn how better to manage your charges. And don’t think experienced beekeepers don’t have problems. We all do. However those who are experienced will probably have a solution or a way forward. Everyone who participates will learn so much. They will quadruple their knowledge at the very least.

The Team of 'bee experts':
  • Jo Groom, Crowborough
(almost a bee farmer and has countless colonies. Mother of three and has another career) Jo will lead a safari on Friday
  • Helen Hadley, Ringmer
(just appointed as a seasonal bee inspector and fun to be around ; has several apiaries) Helen hopes to lead unless she is summoned to York to do training. Helen will lead a safari on Saturday am
  • Peter Coxon, Buxted
(scientific and detailed approach to beekeeping with a gift of being able to explain things simply). Afternoon of Saturday and is talking about doing a cream tea
  • Rob Gore, Mayfield (rather like Peter Coxon with a huge breath of knowledge; works full time but also keeps over 6 colonies). Jo Gore is an amazing baker. If you go there you may get honey cake. Saturday am
  • Malcolm Wilkie, St Leonards-on-sea
(rather hapless beekeeper at times but manages over 22 colonies successfully and has lots of nucs and queens). We probably won’t get down to St Leonards unless the group really wants to see the mini mating hives. We can decide on the day. Saturday am
  • Keith Obbard, Groombridge
over 50 years of beekeeping experience
